October census - EAL funding and language codes

In order for Norfolk schools to receive their full entitlement to EAL funding, which is currently £1530 (secondary) and £565 (primary from Yr. 1) per child per year for first 3 years after arrival in the UK, it is important to ensure that schools' October census data is recorded accurately. For EAL funding to be triggered, the child's FIRST language should be submitted in the census. If a child has been exposed to another language during early development, irrespective of their proficiency in English, that language should be recorded.

We advise your school to check your data and make any necessary changes if currently you have children are listed in the following categories:

  • Believed to be English
  • Information not obtained
  • Believed to be other than English
  • Other language
  • Other than English

Accurate language information also enables the EAL/EDC Advisory Team to provide the best services and training provision to schools. To see what training is currently on offer to schools please go to EAL training - Schools (norfolk.gov.uk)
