Admissions policy

School admission policy : 2023/24 (Agreed)

 THIS SCHOOL WAS OVER-SUBSCRIBED FOR SEPTEMBER 2022

To apply for a place at Jane Austen College you need to do two things.  You must make application to your home Local Authority as invited AND complete a short "fair access banding" test organised by the College.

What is “fair access banding”?  This is when each applicant sits a short test which places them into a banding based on the outcome.  The school then takes an equal number from each band to ensure that our intake remains fully comprehensive. This is not a pass or fail test and students and parents should not be concerned about it at all. Full details of how to complete this stage can be found on the Jane Austen College website and the college will be writing with full detail to parents.  Remember - to apply for a place you must compete both parts of the application process.

The college will admit students representing all levels of ability among applicants for admission to the college. All applicants will take a standardised non-verbal reasoning assessment, which will be standardised against the national distribution of ability. Then students will be placed in rank order and will be allocated to one of nine stanines

Where the number of applications for admission is greater than the published admissions number, applications will be considered against the criteria set out below. The admission of children with statements of Special Educational Needs or EHC plans (Education Health and Care Plans) where the college is named on the statement or Plan, takes place under different Regulations and happens before the application of the criteria set out below. For remaining applicants, the criteria will be applied in the order in which they are set out below to create the rank order in each stanine for offering places:

1.     Looked after children (previously known as children in the care of the local authority) and all previously looked after children. Previously looked after children are children who were looked after but ceased to be so because they were adopted (or became subject to a child arrangement order or special guardianship order).

2.     Children who have a sibling on roll at the college at the time of the proposed admission this includes siblings in the Sixth Form

3.     Children of staff at the college: a) where the member of staff has been employed at the college for two or more years at the time at which the application for admission to the college is made; and/or b) the member of staff is recruited to fill a vacant post for which there is a demonstrable skill shortage;

4.     Children who currently attend Charles Darwin Primary Academy or Norwich Primary Academy.

5.     Children living nearest the college, by straight line distance (“as the crow flies”)
