Dear Headteacher

Employee Ethnic and Disability Monitoring Form

This mailing contains a number of envelopes that I would be grateful if you could pass on to the named employees at your school.

The County Council has had to undertake what has become a regular audit of payroll records to identify missing ethnic and disability data. The collection of this information is part of a procedure agreed between the County Council and its recognised trade unions and professional associations, aimed at informing and improving the County Council’s equal opportunities policies and practices.

We are required by race relations legislation to keep information on ethnicity and racial background in order that the County Council is able to identify any possible inequalities in the way services are delivered, investigate the underlying causes and remove any unfairness or disadvantage. The summary information has to be provided to central government by Norfolk County Council.

Without this monitoring process the County Council would not know whether its race equality policies are working and racial discrimination is being avoided.

The County Council is also concerned that people with disabilities receive fair provision of its services. The information about disabilities is therefore sought in order to identify any areas where people with disabilities are being treated unfairly and make changes for improvement.

I apologise for asking you to undertake this additional task and for the fact that some employees may well have provided this information previously but it has not appeared on the payroll records for some reason.

Your support in this exercise is much appreciated. I have asked if your staff could return the forms to Education Personnel, marked for my attention by way of the weekly courier post service, by 21st March.

Yours sincerely

Bryan Slater
