Dear Headteacher

Artsmark Round 3 – 2002/03

I hope that you are familiar with the Artsmark scheme, the national award available to schools committed to the development of the arts.  The third round of Artsmark was launched on September 2nd and accompanying this letter is a flyer giving further details.

The Artsmark materials, which are freely available, will help you carry out a detailed self audit and self review of the arts in your school and provide a benchmark for arts improvement.  Schools are able to match their arts provision against one of three standards and you may find the process useful, whether or not you decide subsequently to submit an application.

The Artsmark raises the arts profile of schools and advertises their commitment to providing their students with a broad range of arts opportunities.  Many Norfolk schools have already successfully achieved Artsmark status and it is hoped that many more will be successful in Round 3. You may already be aware, that to support the application process, we are offering courses to Primary and Secondary schools (course flyer attached) this term.  It is recommended that schools considering applying, attend this course, which is likely to save schools time in the longer term.

Please note that no Artsmark packs are available through the LEA . If you have any queries then please contact the Artsmark Helpline direct on 0800 0560 196 or email artsmark@artscouncil.org.uk  .

Full application and guidance materials are available at the new Artsmark website www.artsmark.org.uk

The LEA expects and wishes to be approached at a later stage in the process (and no later than Friday 29th November 2002), for a supporting reference.  Please inform the Adviser for the Promotion of the Arts in Schools by Friday 29th November 2002 of your intention to apply in order to assist this process.

The initial closing date for applications is 6th December 2002 . Awards will be announced in May 2003.  The Artsmark, once awarded is valid for three years.

Yours sincerely,

Bryan Slater
