Title

The Six Term Year

Summary of contents

Under cover sheet MI 116/02, the LEA provided details of the consultation exercise being undertaken on the Independent Commission's proposals on the six term year.

The LEA has now received a supply of the Local Government Association's pamphlet Guide to the Standard School Year and a copy is attached for information. The LGA has suggested that schools may wish to place the pamphlet on a noticeboard in the staff room.

The LGA has also produced a sheet showing its latest draft proposals for the 2004/05 academic year - copy attached. Please note that they are now suggesting a later start in August to those originally suggested in the Independent Commission's Report - The Rhythms of Schooling.

Also enclosed for the attention of your parent governors is a letter and attachment from Lucinda Poliakoff and John Riddett, parent representatives on the County Council.

Associated documents

The Rhythms of Schooling - Independent Commission on the Organisation of the School Year.

Summary of action required

Please make the pamphlet accessible to staff.

All staff are welcome to comment on the proposals.

Additional information can be found via the LEA's website www.esinet.norfolk.gov.uk/sixtermyear

Comments may be submitted by email to the address given below or via the LEA's website. If preferred, comments may be sent in writing to Malcolm Reeve c/o Strategic Core, Education Department, County Hall, Norwich, NR1 2DL

Please forward a copy of the enclosed letter and attachments to each of your parent governors.

The exercise is not a referendum but account will be taken of all views received. The outcome of the consultation, both locally and regionally, will be reported to the County Council's Cabinet which will decide whether the Commission's proposals should be adopted in Norfolk. If change is agreed, it is unlikely to take place in Norfolk until the beginning of the 2004/05 academic year.
