Letter to all schools
Dear Colleague
Managing Premises Issues – Training for Staff in Schools
Recent changes to the ways in which schools are funded e.g. Formula Capital, Devolved Maintenance Budgets etc., have given schools greater antonomy regarding management of premises issues. It is essential therefore that persons in schools have sufficient information, advice and training to enable them to carry out these responsibilities competently. This will ensure that statutory requirements are met and the health and safety of individuals is ensured during construction and maintenance works.
The Education Department and Norfolk Property Services are soon to introduce a document, "Managing Premises Issues a Guide for Schools." This document gives details of how such works can be conducted.
As this is such an important area, a programme of training sessions has been devised, directly related and supplementary to the new document. The training is designed for persons in schools with responsibility for maintenance and construction projects. This may include headteachers, other senior managers, site managers, caretakers etc. Training for Governors on the subject is being arranged separately, early in 2002, through the Governor Support Unit.
I would strongly recommend that you ensure, either yourself or an appropriate member of your staff attends one of these 1/2 day sessions.
A list of venues and dates is attached. Please indicate your choice in the appropriate box and return the attached slip to the address shown. The sessions are free of charge although no supply cover funding is available.
I am sure you will agree that in such an important area, it is essential that persons are given all the assistance necessary to ensure effective arrangements exist in schools.
Yours sincerely
Director of Education
