The Role of the Designated Teacher
· The Designated Teacher will be a member of the school staff with sufficient authority to influence school policy and practice
· The Designated Teacher is an important resource for the child, carers and parents, social workers and other teachers, school governors and support staff.
· The Designated Teacher will be an advocate for young people in public care, accessing services and support and ensuring that the school share and supports high expectations for them.
· The Designated Teacher will, with the Social Worker, ensure that the Personal Education Plan is completed and kept up to date.
· The Designated Teacher may have a wider role in overseeing the education of all children known to Social Services.
· The Designated Teacher will be the main contact for the child, its carers and parents and social worker.
· The Designated Teacher will work closely with the Education Coordinator in promoting and monitoring the progress of all children looked after who attend the school.
· The Designated Teacher will be able to access training provided by the Local Authority.
· The Designated Teacher will be able to join a local network of Designated Teachers coordinated by the Education Coordinator.
