Recent changes to the ways in which schools are funded e.g. Formula Capital Devolved Maintenance Budgets etc have given schools greater antonomy regarding the management of premises issues. It is essential therefore that persons in schools have sufficient information, advice and training to enable them to carry out these responsibilities competently. This will ensure that statutory requirements are met and the health and safety of individuals is ensured during construction and maintenance works.

You may recall I wrote to all schools in August 2001 informing you of a series of training courses designed to support the introduction of the new "Managing Premises Issues – A Guide for Schools" document.

These courses have now taken place however not all schools were able to attend. I am therefore writing again to all schools to remind you of the existence of this important new guidance. The document can be accessed at the following web address:
