Dear Colleague

GUIDANCE TO SCHOOLS: ANTI-RACIST EDUCATION

Attached to this letter is a copy of the updated guidance to schools on anti-racist education. This guidance replaces the previous guidance "Multicultural and Anti-racist Education" which was originally issued to schools in 1995. The new guidance has been updated in the light of the recommendations of the MacPherson Report (1999) and the proposals of the Race Relations (amendment) Act (2000).

The guidance sets out the requirements of schools arising from this recent legislation, but I would particularly draw your attention to the need to maintain a record of racist incidents within schools, and to report them to parents, governors and the LEA. The advice on pages 8 – 11 should enable you to meet this requirement. The school’s effectiveness in promoting racial equality will be judged by OFSTED inspectors under the terms of the revised framework for the inspection of schools.

I would be grateful of you would complete and return to David Sheppard the brief response form which is attached to this letter, as this information will help to ensure that we are providing appropriate support to schools on this important issue.

Yours sincerely

Bryan Slater
