Dear
Colleague
I am writing to
confirm the delivery of support by the Psychological Service to your school for
September 2002 and specifically to give you information about School Support
Team (SST) members who will be working with you. Each school will have a
designated educational psychologist and specialist teacher; the details of
which are attached.
You will be pleased
to hear there is no change to the general pattern of service delivery. At ‘Level 1’ of service delivery, all
schools will receive visits from members of the School Support Team based upon
a needs-led time allocation formula. As
now, there will be termly planning visits by one or both member(s) of the SST
(depending on school size and need). In large schools we will encourage other
services to join these meetings, such as the Youth and Community Service, so
that schools can benefit from our co-ordinated approach. Our approach is in
keeping with the revised SEN Code of Practice (2002).
At ‘Level 2’ Area
Management Teams will, as now, be able to assign additional time where needs
require more support or more specialist interventions. At ‘Level 2’ we also provide off-site
teaching at PRUs, support for children in public care and pre-school
interventions.
‘Level 3’ work
involves the delivery of low incidence specialist support such as help
following critical incidents as well as the development of our specialist
approaches in learning, EBD and disability so that all schools benefit from
consistently expert support.

Educational Psychology
As you know, there is
a national shortage of educational psychologists (EPs). However we are pleased to have appointed two
new EPs and two Assistant EPs to the team in September. The Assistant EPs will be undertaking supervised casework alongside specialist
teachers and qualified EPs.
There are still some
EP vacancies and we are making considerable efforts to recruit additional
staff. In the meantime we are
organising deployment so that all schools will have access to an educational
psychologist as well as to other members of the Psychological Service.
I trust this
information is helpful. If you have any
queries about Psychological Service support, please contact your School Support
Team in the first instance and we will endeavour to help you. The Area
Management Team or Head of Service can be contacted if there are any further
issues to resolve.
Thank you for your
continued support.
