Dear Colleague
Special Public Holiday - 3rd June, 2002
As you are no doubt aware, a Special Public Holiday to mark the Queen's Golden Jubilee has been declared by Parliament to take place on 3rd June, 2002.
Although this day is within the Summer half term break, it will have an effect on support staff pay as it should be treated in the same way as other public holidays for leave and pay purposes. This means that part-time staff whose pay is based on a proportion of annual salary that a full-time employee would receive, would technically be entitled to an additional day's pay. However, it would be impractical to calculate the value of a single day's pay for the enormous number of part-time staff employed in schools and, therefore, I have decided that the most appropriate way forward would be to ask Headteachers to grant an additional day's leave to be taken at another time. I would suggest that this additional day's leave is planned in advance with individual staff and phased in order to minimise the impact on the school.
If you need any further advice on this matter, please telephone your school's Personnel Consultant.
Yours sincerely,
Bryan Slater
Director of Education
