Re:   Education Act 2002 Section 175

Attendance and Reports to Child Protection Conferences

You will be aware from previous MI information that the above legislation become law on 1st June 2004.

This section requires schools and Education establishments to safeguard and promote the welfare of children and have regard to any guidance issued by the Secretary of State.

The present Guidance is circular 10/95 which now stands as legislation.

The DfES issued draft guidance for consultation in February 2004.   This will replace circular 10/95 when completed.  Both circular 10/95 and the draft guidance "Safeguard Children" require schools to prepare reports and attend Child Protection Conferences throughout the year. This includes making arrangements for cover/contact during school holidays.

It would be helpful therefore if you could complete the attached contact sheet to identify who would be available during the school holidays.  In exceptional circumstances, where a school in unable to be represented at a Child Protection Conference arrangements are being made by Grace Cheese, Education Officer for Child Protection (or her cover) to attend and liase with the Independent Chairs of the Child Protection Conferences.

Yours sincerely
