Dear Headteacher

Annual Conference for Primary School Deputy Heads:

What Makes Effective Learning? –

The Deputy’s Role in Closing the Learning Gap

Tuesday 4 January 2005 at Barnham Broom Conference Centre

The annual conference for all deputies and assistant heads takes place at the above venue at the start of the Spring Term 2005.  In the past some colleagues have been unable to attend the event during term time, hence the move to one of the official school closure days.

The conference will be led by Mike Hughes who has developed a high reputation nationally for the quality and impact of his work in the field of improving the quality of learning in the classroom and for providing proven strategies that increase pupil motivation and attainment.  Publications include Closing The Learning Gap, Lessons For Learning and Strategies For Closing The Learning Gap.  Mike has had a wealth of experience in education as class teacher, head, Ofsted inspector and NPQH trainer and is now a highly popular training provider.

The programme will consist of the following elements -

·        A full day of key note speeches and workshop sessions focusing on ways in which deputy heads can make an impact on developing the Primary Strategy in their schools, and raising standards of teaching and learning

·        Time allotted to consider and discuss issues raised by participants

·        An opportunity to network with other deputies and assistant heads

·        An opportunity to consider the future direction of the programme of training and support for deputy heads

The conference has been planned to align with the principles contained in ‘Excellence and Enjoyment’ and the key thrusts of Norfolk’s response to the National Primary Strategy.  It is particularly relevant at a time when evidence from Norfolk’s Supported Self Evaluation programme and from the LEA OFSTED profile, indicate that improving the learning climate and raising standards are key challenges faced by the school’s management team.  The deputy has a major role to play in this.

This course will give clear, practical advice on how this can be achieved and we are sure that your deputy and school will gain great benefit from the course.  We hope you will support and encourage your deputy’s application.  It is of course possible to book on line at http://advisoryserviceactive.norfolk.gov.uk/inset or by forwarding a completed booking form by 15 November.  For further details contact Ralph Cross or Tim Strugnell on 01603 433276.

Yours sincerely
