Dear Colleague
The new Child Protection Legislation Section 175 of the Education Act
2002, which came into force on 1st June required the LEA, schools
and educational establishments to make arrangements to ensure that their
functions are carried out with a view to safeguarding and promoting the welfare
of children. In addition, they must have regard to any guidance issued by the
Secretary of State.
On 6th September the DfES issued the statutory guidance
‘Safeguarding Children in Education’. I
understand that two copies will be sent to each school. Copies can be found on the website www.teachernet.gov.uk/childprotection/guidance.htm
The new legislation and guidance now places a statutory duty on
schools/educational establishments to have in place a trained Designated Teacher
(senior member of the school leadership
team) for child protection and to ensure that all staff who have day to day
contact with pupils receive appropriate training. Many schools now have more than one member of staff trained so
they can cover when the Designated Teacher is not available.
Attached to this letter is information about the LEA training courses
available during this school year for new Designated Teachers/Headteachers and
for updating previous training.
All Designated Teachers/Headteachers for Child Protection are now
required to have undertaken the one day ACPC/LEA recognised course. This must be updated and renewed every two
years.
The Designated Teacher/Headteacher is also required to ensure that all
staff who have day to day contact with pupils in their schools/educational
establishment, receive appropriate training every three years. Both the training courses offered will cover
relevant information to assist schools with this role.
For School Governors, there is already ongoing training available
through the Governor Support Unit.
A data base is held by the LEA of all named Designated Teachers for
each school and their training, which you are responsible for updating
electronically.
If you would like to attend any of the training sessions, please
complete the attached form and return it. There is a minimal charge to cover
cost of venue, lunch and training pack.
Further courses and dates may be planned and will be made available as
required.
If you have any concerns please do not hesitate to contact Grace
Cheese, Education Officer (Child Protection) on 01603 223473 or by email at grace.cheese@norfolk.gov.uk.
Yours sincerely
Dr B Slater
Director of Education
