I am pleased to be able to send you copies of two documents that have recently been produced by the National Healthy Schools Team. They relate to Promoting Emotional Health and Wellbeing and Promoting Children’s and Young People’s Participation. These documents are the result of research and collaboration by a wide range of professionals and focus on the importance of addressing these areas if young people are to succeed. They give helpful background information to the two themes as well as suggesting a range of practical approaches that will help schools to implement them. The two documents are integral to The National Healthy School Standard which is promoted locally through Healthy Norfolk Schools. Many of you have, I know, already signed up to the local programme.
It is now ten years since the first schools in Norfolk began to embark on activities linked to Healthy Norfolk Schools. Hundreds of schools across the County have accessed training, developed action plans and embarked on activities to promote health and well-being.
Since Spring 2003 there has been a change in emphasis
at a national level to ensure greater consistency across programmes throughout
the country. We now have a national
definition of involvement that schools are expected to work towards.
The current high level of interest in the links
between children’s health and education has never been higher. There is now a national database charting
schools’ involvement in local healthy schools programmes. Furthermore, Healthy Schools involvement is
now a specific question on the OfSTED S4 form and so it is particularly
important that schools are presenting their current level of involvement with
the programme.
As a result of these changing circumstances the Healthy Norfolk Schools Executive has agreed that only schools that have re-registered their commitment to Healthy Schools since September 2003 are entitled to call themselves a “Healthy School” and to use the new logo. If you are uncertain about your current status regarding Healthy Schools please contact Adèle Godsmark.
There are currently over 100 schools in Norfolk which have registered during the last year and we know that many schools are continuing to develop health-related activities that are very much in the spirit of Healthy Schools. We anticipate that it will be a relatively straightforward process to support these schools to register their engagement in the programme thus allowing them to use the new logo and to describe themselves as participating in Healthy Schools. Schools that feel they have let their Healthy Schools activities lapse and wish to re-register should contact the Healthy Norfolk Schools Team who will be very willing to help.
I would encourage all Norfolk schools to consider
joining the Healthy Norfolk Schools Programme.
The current process is simple and very much linked to school self-review
and ongoing school improvement planning.
In return for their commitment, schools can access a range of free
training and advice and support from the team.
We particularly welcome applications from schools whose free school meal
entitlement is greater than 20% (the National target schools), but the
programme is open to all schools.
If you would like to discuss any aspect of the
process for joining Healthy Schools please contact Adèle Godsmark on 01603
307356 or via the Professional Development Centre on 01603 433276.
I hope you will find the enclosed documents stimulating and helpful.
Yours sincerely
Bryan Slater
