Dear Headteacher/Designated
Teacher, Chair of Governor
Education
Act 2002 Section 175
Safeguarding
Children In Education
You would by now have received from the DfES a paper
copy of the above Statutory Guidance.
This Guidance replaces Circular 10/95 concerning
child protection and is part of the Education Act 2002 Section 175.
It places a duty on LEAs, schools and FE institutions
to safeguard and promote the welfare of children and to update child protection
arrangements.
Safeguarding children is the responsibility of us all
and covers areas other than child protection. It encompasses issues such as
health and safety, bullying, school security, first aid, drugs and substance
abuse, as examples.
Attached to this letter is an outline of the
Statutory guidance and what your school needs to have in place in respect of
child protection . All Designated teachers/Head teacher for child protection
are required to read the guidance.
Further copies of the guidance can be found on the
web site: www.teachernet.gov.uk/guidance.htm
Child
Protection Conferences.
We recognise that sadly child abuse happens
throughout the year and not just in school term times. Under this new
legislation Head teachers have a duty to ensure that child protection
conferences are covered and reports submitted, when it relates to a child in
your school.
During the last summer school holidays, 38 child
protection conferences took place in respect of 69 children, who attended 50
Norfolk schools.
It is
important therefore that you co-operate in providing contact details during
such long holiday periods, so we can work together in carrying out our
statutory duties.
If you would like further information please contact
Grace Cheese Education Officer- Child Protection.
Yours Sincerely
Bryan
Slater
