Summary of
contents |
A telephone scam is currently operating. When the phone rings a recorded message is played “Congratulations we are calling to advise you that you have won an all expenses paid trip to …. (somewhere exotic). If you press 9 you are connect to a premium line that bills in the region of £20 per minute. Even if you disconnect immediately, the call will stay connected for 5 minutes (£100). If you stay connected a call can take a further 12 minutes, you are asked for your postcode and house number, you will then receive the message “Sorry, you are not one of the lucky winners” The cost of these calls can run to approx £260. It is not known what the postcode and house number information is used for. These calls appear to originate outside the UK and BT are powerless to stop the calls. The only safe solution is to hang up immediately on any recorded message calls you receive. |
