Dear Headteacher

Walk to School Week: 24 to 28 May 2004 – Giving Children Time to Walk and Talk!

Norfolk schools enter the Time Zone!  We are writing to offer your school the opportunity to join with other Norfolk schools that are participating in the national ‘Walk to School Week’.  The aim of this campaign is for schools, children, parents and the whole community to recognise the benefits of walking to school:

Schools taking part will receive a variety of free resources, including posters, certificates, leaflets, route planner (colouring sheet) and, of course, stickers.  NB: The resources are generally geared towards younger pupils but we are anxious to involve secondary schools in the campaign. If you would like to discuss suitable activities for secondary schools, please telephone Adèle Godsmark on 01603 433276.

Time for a challenge:  We would like to see how many more children are walking to school and are still walking during the next 2 weeks!  We are asking all classes to complete a simple ‘hands up’ survey one day the week before the Walk to School, then the same weekday during the next 2 weeks.  Send us your school’s results and the number of children in your school – we will award prizes of £100 book tokens to the two schools with the biggest percentage increase in numbers walking during Walk to School Week and £100 to the two schools who can keep them walking!

Last year 101 Norfolk schools took part so we would like to beat that target this year.

If your school would like to enter The Time Zone and take the Time to Walk and Talk please fill in the enclosed order form and return to Healthy Norfolk Schools at the address above or fax to 01603 700236.  Please let us have your request for by Friday, 2 April 2004 and we will aim to get them to your school by Friday, 14 May.

We look forward to working with you and hope you enjoy the week.

Yours sincerely
