Dear Colleague,
Certification of PSHE Teachers
From April this year, we will
be recruiting teachers throughout Norfolk to participate in the PSHE
Certification programme.
What is it?
The twelve-month PSHE Certification programme of continuing professional development (CPD) has been developed to enable teachers to gain recognition of their experience in teaching personal, social and health education (PSHE).
Training and
support will be offered to enhance teachers’ skills and increase confidence in
delivering this highly important curriculum area. This will be part of a national programme developed to improve
the effectiveness and raise the profile of PSHE, including sex and relationship
education (SRE), and drug education.
Teachers will
need to gather evidence against standards in two dimensions:
2. Extension module: Knowledge and
understanding and its application in the teaching of SRE or drug education.
Funding has
been secured to support participating teachers. The money will meet the cost of supply cover for the three main
development days. Additional training
and local support will be provided free through twilights and other informal
arrangements.
Teachers who have at least 3 years teaching experience and a significant amount of PSHE on their timetable. Places will be limited to one per school (to maximise use of resources).
Schools will benefit by having a member of staff trained in planning and delivering effective PSHE.
Participating
teachers will enjoy the opportunity to share good practice across the
county. This national certification
will enhance individual career development.
Introductory twilight conferences are being held in both Norwich and King’s Lynn on the following dates:
Thursday 22nd April 2004 Norwich PDC 4.30pm – 6.00pm
Thursday 29th April 2004 West Norfolk PDC 4.30pm – 6.00pm
We would encourage interested Headteachers and PSHE Co-ordinators to attend one of the twilight sessions to find out more about the programme. Please return the attached reply slip by Wednesday March 31st if you would like to attend.
Yours sincerely,
Bryan Slater
