Dear Colleague,

Re: School Drug Policies and funding for Drugs Education

You will be aware that it is a government target that all primary schools have a drug policy (which includes procedures for managing any drug related incidents) by April 2004.   Since 2001, many primary schools have either attended INSET or had school based advice and support on developing/ reviewing their policy.

The previous DfES model policy, together with 3 recommended appendices have been used in all training and may be accessed at my website (see details below).

On 9th March 2004, Drugs: Guidance for schools (DfES/0092/2004) was sent to all schools and based on this new document, I advise that you consider the following:

·        if you have developed your policy based on any advice or training since 2001 and have adapted the model policy; remove the 3 appendices and replace them with Appendices 8,9 and 11 from the new guidance document

·        if you have no policy or one which is not based on the model policy; adopt the model as per my website (see details below)

You may obtain further details and copies of the model policy on my website,

http://www.norfolkesinet.org.uk/pages/viewpage.asp?uniqid=1934

I would also like to make you aware that although Standards Funding for Drugs Education has now ended, my time will continue to be free to schools (whether that is individual advice and support or INSET courses). I would be grateful if you could make your staff aware of this as details in the INSET Opportunities Handbook 2004/5 indicate that there is a charge for Drug Education courses: this is not now the case.

Yours sincerely
