Dear Colleague
I am writing to you to outline the priorities for the primary National Literacy and Numeracy Strategy in Norfolk for 2003 and 2004.
The LEA continues to be in a position to target Literacy and Numeracy advisory support for approximately a quarter of Norfolk schools. Evaluations indicate that this support and training is highly valued and we endeavour to maintain this standard. Our priorities for school-based support for the next academic year will include:
§ support to English and Maths Co-ordinators;
§ in-class support for teachers on strategies for effective learning;
§ support for medium and short term planning;
§ support for senior management teams for subject action plans, monitoring effective provision, school-based INSET and curriculum target setting.
This support will be focussed on schools that will be identified using one or more of the following criteria:
§ where attainment is below that of similar schools;
§ where progress over the last 3 years is less than the average for similar schools;
§ RDA recommendation;
§ where new or inexperienced teachers, subject leaders or senior management teams would benefit.
Schools that will be offered fully funded adviser support from September will be notified by 23rd May 2003.
The Literacy and Numeracy Standards Fund also supports training for teachers and subject leaders. Enclosed are the details of the funded training on offer to all schools. The funding for these courses will be allocated to the school budget on a termly basis following attendance. Funding this year is limited and enables us to meet some
nationally directed priorities for all schools, e.g. teaching more able pupils in Year 6, as well as providing opportunities for small numbers of teachers to attend previously run training. Please note that these courses have very limited numbers and places need to be booked as soon as possible.
If you have any queries please do not hesitate to contact Diana Duhig (senior admin assistant), Mary Jane Edwards or Robin Ings.
Yours sincerely
Chris Snudden
Primary Strategy Manager
