Dear Colleague,                                                                               6th September 2005

£20,000.00 to support Home Front Recall Project at Holt Hall

Before the summer holiday we advertised our intention to run a 1940’s living history event this year to mark the 60th anniversary of the end of the Second World War. This event will follow the very successful format of our previous 1940’s living history events.

We can now confirm that this year’s event will be run in partnership with The Royal Norfolk Regiment Living History Group and the North Norfolk Railway. Due to grant funding from the National Lottery Home Front Recall project, which funds projects aimed at understanding the War on the Home Front, £4,000.00 will be used to support participating children, therefore the price per student will only be:

£39. 45p.

The remainder of the grant will be used to purchase and fund other services that make up the event. This means that participating children will benefit from the full £20,000.00. The event is aimed at years 5 and 6 and includes:

Visit to the school by a Second World War veteran (if requested)

A pre-visit to the school by the warden of Holt Hall to discuss the project with the participating children

            Steam train journey from Sheringham.

Ride on a period red double-decker Routemaster bus  from Holt Station to Holt Hall

Half week residential role play as ‘Evacuees’

All meals and activities throughout the half week.

Project pack for visiting group leaders

            De-briefing at Holt Station

This living history event has been hailed in the past as one of the very best of its kind and has been used as an example of best practice by the Open University in using drama to teach history.

The children will play the part of evacuees from London and will experience something of life in Britain during the early part of the War.

There is already some interest in this event, and at this price for a residential experience, we anticipate that demand for places will be high. We therefore recommend that schools should book as soon as possible. The event will run from Monday to Wednesday and Wednesday to Friday during the two weeks from 31st October to 11th November.

We look forward to working with you on this Living History event.

Yours sincerely,

George Carrick, Warden
