Dear Colleague
Revision of Norfolk
Agreed Syllabus for Religious Education
An Agreed Syllabus Conference was convened in 2002 to undertake the revision of the Norfolk Agreed Syllabus for RE. Work is in progress, and many of you have helped in the process. We would like to thank those of you who completed a questionnaire some time ago which is continuing to be very helpful to us, and those of you who have been involved on the various working parties and consultations so far.
You may have heard that a Non Statutory National Framework for RE has been commissioned by the Secretary of State, and work on this is in progress. We in Norfolk had been aware of this possibility for some time, but the Framework was only commissioned in November 2003, to be completed by June 2004 and available to interested parties by September 2004. We have worked hard to ensure that local developments take full account of the national picture.
The purpose of the Non Statutory National Framework for RE is to enhance teaching and learning in RE, thereby raising standards of achievement in the subject across the country through the presentation of RE requirements in the format of a National Curriculum document.
As the revision of the Norfolk Agreed Syllabus is taking place at the same time as the development of the Non Statutory National Framework for RE, we are intending to take the framework fully into account in the revised Norfolk Syllabus, but with further advice and guidance tailored to meet the needs of teachers in Norfolk. The Norfolk Agreed Syllabus for RE remains and will remain, the legal requirement for schools in Norfolk. The Framework will not replace this. The revised Norfolk
Syllabus will be available as soon as possible after the publication of the Non Statutory National Framework and will show how the material can be adapted for use in schools to meet the new requirements and assist teachers in the development of the subject.
We would also like to add that if you are meeting the requirements of the current Norfolk Syllabus for RE you are unlikely to need to make major changes. We are looking to develop the ideas already being used, not change them. Good RE will remain good RE.
If you have any queries please would you contact Julia Idiens (in the first instance) at the Professional Development Centre – telephone 01603 433276, extn. 151.
Yours sincerely
Fred Corbett Marian Agombar
