3rd. July 2002,
Holocaust
Memorial Professional Development Day for Teachers.
Dear
Head Teacher,
It has become a tradition that this branch
of the Council of Christians and Jews, in conjunction with the Lord Mayor of
Norwich commemorates National Holocaust Day by promoting either a fund raising
event in aid of charity or an educational exhibition. The Council of Christian
and Jews, which is a Registered Charity and not a missionary nor a political
organisation, brings together the Christian and Jewish Communities in a common
effort to fight the evils of prejudice, intolerance and discrimination between
people of different religions, races and colours, and to work for the
betterment of human relations, based on mutual respect, understanding and
goodwill.
The Norfolk and Norwich branch meets about
four times a year for formal and fun events, lectures and discussions organised
by its committee.
On the first Holocaust Memorial Day in 2001
the CCJ organised a joint service of reflection in Norwich Cathedral. In 2002 a
musical evening in Norwich was organised on behalf of Children’s Charities.
On the 23rd. January 2003, we
are offering to host a “professional development day for teachers in primary
and secondary schools in Norfolk and Suffolk” devoted to the teaching of the
Holocaust in schools as part of the curriculum, examination studies,
assemblies, or to raise awareness of the National Memorial Day. The programme
will include speakers(s) from the Holocaust Trust (an education body), the
Education Officer from the Council for Christians and Jews, survivor(s) of the
Holocaust and we hope from the Imperial War Museum in London. There will also
be an exhibition of materials available during the day as examples of
appropriate teaching aids.
The primary aim is to offer assistance both
practical and theoretical to those teachers who are or will be actively
involved in the teaching of this subject. The day will be arranged at a venue
in Norwich still to be confirmed. There will be a nominal charge for lunch.
Will you indicate by completing the
attached pro forma and returning it to me the numbers, if any, of teachers who
provisionally would wish to attend?
This will give me an indication of the size of premises that will be
needed and the numbers for whom I need to cater.
For further information I can be contacted
by telephone on 01 606 616129 between 0900 - 1600 hrs Monday to Thursday, and
Sunday or by email at the address on the letter heading.
Yours sincerely,
George Willson,
Secretary Norfolk and Norwich Branch of the
CCJ
