Charities on the National Curriculum

You may be aware of a new recently launched initiative, Giving Nation, that aims to encourage school children to support charities as part of the national curriculum.  11-16 year olds will be encouraged to discuss the benefits of philanthropy and consider how they should support their local community.

The campaign will be run through the citizenship element of the curriculum, starting in September. The Giving Campaign is also developing a free education pack for teachers, which will be sent out in September.  Further details can be obtained from the website www.givingcampaign.org.uk

Cancer Research UK is the largest volunteer-supported cancer research organisation in the world. With a dedicated team of 3,000 scientists and an annual scientific spend of more than £176 million, raised almost entirely through public donations.  Our mission is to cure cancer faster through world class research.

Cancer is the most common cause of death from illness in children with 1,450 new cases per year.  Smoking is a major cause of cancer.  As part of our work to prevent cancer, we have produced the attached guide to help students to stop smoking.  It can be used as part of the curriculum in PSHE and Science, in a lunchtime or after school club, or by students working on their own.

We would be delighted to come to your school and give a presentation of the guide.  This can be tailored to your requirements and I hope you will take the opportunity to use this important resource.

If you would like a presentation or to discuss the guide further, please could you contact me on 01603 765830 (office), 07747 630988 (mobile)  or by email at beverley.mottram-smith@cancer.org.uk
