UKDFfEA Events Programme 2002/2003

ISLINGTON DESIGN AND BUSINESS CENTRE

 

1. Presentations include

 

·       Ministers

·       Department for Education and Skills and the Disability Rights Commission

·       UK Disability Forum and member organisations representing visually impaired, hearing impaired, learning difficulties, physically impaired sectors and including disabled people from minority sectors with innovative presentations in all content areas at each event, e.g. RNIB, RNID, MENCAP etc.

·       European Commission input on Tuesday 3rd December 2002 

     “Education for all – a celebration of the European Day of Disabled People”

·       Alliance for Inclusive Education/Disability Equality in Education at all events.

 

2. Events

 

 

·       Thursday 21st November 2002

     “The way forward – the inclusive primary school”

Delegates:  Local authorities, governors and staff of primary schools, plus interested disabled people and representatives of disability organisations.

 

·       Monday 25th November 2002

“The way forward – the inclusive secondary school”

Delegates: Local authorities, governors /staff of secondary schools, interested disabled people and representatives of disability organisations.

 

·       Monday 2nd December 2002

Making the business and statutory sectors more responsive to the needs of disabled people: 

          a) as customers b) as of work experience and training

Delegates: Information and service providers from the private and statutory sectors, interested disabled people and representatives of disability organisations and the Further and Higher Education sectors.

 

·       Tuesday 3rd December 2002 

“Education for all – a celebration of the European Day of Disabled People”

 

Delegates: Open to all, specifically disabled people and representatives of disability organisations, educationalists and members of the government.

 

NB This event will be followed by at least two conferences in 2003, one devoted to further and higher education, the other with the theme of lifelong learning.

 

2.  Aims

Each of these events aims to promote a more inclusive approach, and to provide educationalists/businesses and local authorities with practical tools to meet the needs of disabled people.

 

·       There will be information sharing about the Disability Discrimination Act, as well as the Special Education Needs Disability Act.

 

·       Education and business benefits as a result of adopting an inclusive approach will be explored.

 

·       Event outcomes will enable UK Disability Forum and delegates to enter into consultation with government and others.

 

3.      Content – The challenge of Inclusion

 

·         The extension of the Disability Discrimination Act to education

 

·      The Disability Rights Commission “Educating for Equality” Campaign

 

·       Keynotes speakers from government and UK Disability Forum – a whole disability perspective, supported by experts from the visually impaired, hearing impaired, learning difficulties, physically impaired sectors and including disabled people from minority language sectors.

·       Showcases of good practice – Inclusive practice working.

·       Identifying the Barriers - Seminars and workshops on specific issues and topics.

·       Exhibitions

 

4.     Outcomes

 

Key outcomes will include information sharing, networking, development programmes and planning tools, specific recommendations to inform action plans, and the opportunity to input into UK and European policy on disability issues and to plan next years events programme.
