AWCEBD ONE DAY COURSE.
BEYOND BEHAVIOUR MANAGEMENT.
APRIL 27TH, THE
PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT CENTRE, WOODSIDE ROAD, NORWICH
Course Organisers and
Directors: Keith Bovair and Rich Rollinson.
This
Course will address the need for teachers, teaching assistants, social and
mental health workers, carers, and all those working with children with
emotional and behavioural difficulties to: -
·
Understand
why children behave as they do
·
Manage
the behaviour in the practical situation
·
Help
children change the undesirable behaviours
·
Empower
them to take control of their behaviours.
In
the current climate of Social Inclusion, the term Behaviour Management is used
frequently. It is important that people working with and teaching children with
emotional and behavioural difficulties understand causes and have the knowledge
and skills to support the changes required from both the children and the
establishment. If there is to be real
inclusion and on-going success, the interventions need to go beyond the dealing
with the surface behaviour. This Course will enable delegates to begin to
recognise this pathway.
Both
Speakers have a depth and breadth of experience in the field of emotional and
behavioural difficulties within education and the wider community.
Rich
qualified in Social Work in 1983 from Oxford. He lectured for 5 years on the
Health and Social Work course at Reading University. Since 1991 he has been
Director of the Mulberry Bush School and is Chair of the Charterhouse Group of
Therapeutic Communities and Chair of the Research Committee. He has been a
member of the Department of Health National Advisory Group on Residential Care
at the NCB and is currently a member of DfEE National Advisory Group for EBD.
He has lectured widely in this field.
In
Sept 2001 Rich takes up a new post as Regional Director at the Peper Harrow
Foundation.
Keith
has worked in the field of emotional and behavioural difficulties for over 30
years. In England he has been a teacher in charge of a Unit for Intermediate
treatment, a Head Teacher of a residential school for pupils with EBD in the
North East, a Head Teacher of school for children with MLD in Cambridge, a
Lecturer on EBD and Counselling at the University of Birmingham and is
currently Head of a school for children with complex needs in Enfield. He has published numerous books, chapters
and articles and has lectured on special education, ranging from counselling,
aggression, management, the role of specialist settings and modern foreign
languages.
He
is currently President of the European Association for Special Education and
has worked closely with the DfEE, QCA and TTA during consultation processes
over recent years.
10.00
– 10.15: Welcome and introduction by AWCEBD speaker.
10.25
– 11.15: Session One: Why do they do
what they do?
This session will
address how professional behaviour effects personal behaviour and the
ramifications for all. The ‘rights
and wrongs’ and the ‘good and bad’ will be examined in active and responsive
behaviour.
Outcome: delegates will understand
why people might behave as they do and how circumstances and context affect
feelings and behaviour.
11.15:
- 11.45: Coffee Break
11.45 –13.00: Session Two: Working
with the emotionally tongue-tied.
This session will
examine the language we use in describing and managing behaviour and feelings
that lie behind the behaviour. It will address children’s needs to be able to
talk about their feelings – emotional literacy – and find that many children
are emotionally illiterate.
Outcome: delegates will understand
the need for children to be able to talk about their feelings before they can
control the behaviour that expresses them, often in an inappropriate way. They will learn what Emotional Literacy is
and how to help children become emotionally literate.
13.00
– 14.00: Lunch
14.00 – 15.45: Session Three: Behaviour management vs. replacing and
shaping behaviour.
This session will look at the appropriate frameworks for owning, replacing and shaping behaviour and expectations that we all have. It will give examples of ways to help children take control of their own behaviour for long term impact rather than short term results.
Outcome: delegates will understand and be able to transfer to their
workplace, how to help children change their behaviour and remain in control.
The
sessions will be informative, interactive and constructional.
13.45
– 16.00: Closure by AWCEBD speaker.
