Disability Discrimination Act and the Schools Access Initiative

Every school is required to have an access plan that outlines their priorities to improve access for both current and prospective disabled pupils, to ensure that they do not receive less favourable treatment, nor are put at a substantial disadvantage in comparison with their non disabled peers. The Schools Access Initiative (SAI) helps to support schools and fund adaptations and improvements at schools for pupils with a disability, in order to promote inclusion and accessibility. It has contributed to the costs of accessibility improvements at many schools around the county and is committed to continuing this work for 2009/10 and 2010/2011.

A survey was carried out of all schools in 2006 which helped us to prioritise programmes of work. As a result, every school should now have an accessible toilet, and we are working towards ensuring access to all curriculum areas. We now wish to update this information to identify any outstanding issues and prioritise the remaining funding accordingly. In addition, this checklist will help schools identify their own priorities.
