Management Information Sheet
Update on Implementing One-To-One Tuition and Important Safeguarding Information
61 primary schools and 6 secondary schools have been involved in the early roll-out of One-To-One Tuition across Norfolk last term. This exceeded the Norfolk planned targets for delivery. As a result, 640 pupils have been able to benefit from the programme and early qualitative and quantitative data shows that One-To-One Tuition has had a positive impact on pupil attainment and confidence, leading to a definite 'can-do' attitude towards learning.
Pupil comment:
'I feel more confident about English . . . I like English more . . . My spelling has improved and I read more now'. (year 7 pupil)
Request for return of all evaluation forms and pupil record sheets
Please could all schools who were involved in Phase 1 return their evaluation forms and pupil record sheets to Tim Webb as soon as possible so that we can complete the final analysis?
Learning challenges for schools
We know that implementing and embedding the One-To-One programme has presented some difficulties for those in schools in its early stages. We thought it might help if we set out some reminders for you.
Safeguarding and One-To-One Tuition
Please note link with M1 sheet 160/09.
We would like to remind schools that it is vital that all safeguarding and safer recruitment procedures have been followed when recruiting tutors for One-To-One Tuition. The process must be the same as for other teachers. A satisfactory enhanced CRB check must be obtained prior to tuition commencing and schools must satisfy themselves that the tutors' qualifications and documentation are in order.
Evidence of checks must be recorded in the school's single central record. The school also needs to ensure that all tutors are briefed on safeguarding, child protection and safer working practices as part of the school's induction process.
Use of the Norfolk Tutor Pool and TDA tutor leads
Please be aware that whilst tutors listed on the Norfolk Tutor Pool have undergone relevant pre-employment checks, the TDA has not verified any of the information supplied on potential tutors on the national database. Schools will need to carry out these checks themselves.
Reminders of things to take into consideration when planning tuition:
Norfolk implementation documents and the importance of the new website - www.schools.norfolk.gov.uk
We are asking that all schools now use the documents on the new website as the first port of call for support.
The documents 'Leading and Managing One-To-One Tuition in your school' and the 'Business Process' document are the key ones to support senior leaders through the processes needed to complete documentation and to find tutors.
All training opportunities are publicised on the website as soon as they are arranged but we are asking that schools use the LA online booking system to be assured of a place for these training events.
The following documents have been shared at county briefings and electronic copies have been placed on the Norfolk Schools website:

Reminders of things to take into consideration when planning tuition:
If the tutor is unknown to the pupils, ensure that the first meeting is carefully planned. The school may also invite the tutor and parents/guardians to a 'meet the tutor evening'.
Tuition should be carried out in a visible area within the school.
Ensure that if tuition is outside the school day, tutors are not left alone in the school building.
If for any reason tuition is planned to be carried out off site, the headteacher should ensure that appropriate safeguarding and risk assessment procedures have been put in place. |
