Safeguarding Checklist
REVISED OFSTED FRAMEWORK SAFEGUARDING: ADDITIONAL POINTERS
Pre-inspection telephone contact
Head teachers will be asked to prepare the following documentation for examination on the first morning of the inspection:
- | single central record (SCR) |
- | name of the designated member of staff |
- | child protection policy |
- | training record |
- | policies on bullying and harassment |
- | log of racist incidents |
- | accident book |
- | procedures to protect vulnerable pupils |
- | health and safety policy |
Questions to headteacher and staff (including MSA/TA etc.)
- | Who maintains the SCR and how often is it reviewed? |
- | Does the SCR correlate exactly with the school staff list? (i.e. are all members of staff included) |
- | Who is the child protection (CP) named person and is their training current? |
- | Does the designated CP staff member get any specific non-contact time to undertake their duties? |
- | What is the arrangement if the named CP person is absent? |
- | What would a staff member do if an allegation was levelled at the named CP person? |
- | How do you ensure that all safeguarding issues raised by staff are appropriately acted upon? |
- | If a child made a disclosure to you, what procedure would you follow? |
- | What links have you forged with outside agencies in respect of child safety and welfare? |
- | Who is the CP governor and what training have they had? |
- | Do the staff members know who the CP governor is and do they know how to contact that governor? |
- | How often do you review the key safeguarding policies? |
- | How do you know that your procedures for safer recruitment are effective? |
- | In the light of your arrangements to monitor and evaluate policy, can you give me an example of a change you have implemented in the light of experience? |
- | Can you evidence that all safeguarding issues are properly logged? (i.e. bullying, racist incidents, accidents) |
- | How do you ensure that all staff members are suitably trained and alert to CP issues? |
- | Who conducts the site risk assessments and how often is that done? |
- | How do you ensure that the children are aware of safety issues, so that they are able to identify and risk and maintain their own safety? |
- | Talk me through the process you adopt when there is a report of concern about a child. |
Questions to children
- | Do you feel safe when you are at school? |
- | Who looks after you if you feel ill in school? |
- | What would you do if someone made you unhappy or threatened you? |
- | Who looks after your belongings and keeps them safe? |
- | Who makes sure you are safe at break- and lunchtimes? |
- | Has anyone you know been bullied at school? If so, what happened to the bully and the victim? |
- | Are there any places around the school where you need to be extra careful? (i.e. gymnasium, science lessons) |
- | If an unknown grown-up approached you on your way to or from school, what would you do? |
Questions to governors
- | What do you know about your responsibilities regarding policy and procedures, monitoring compliance and reporting on issues to do with child safeguarding? |
- | How aware are governors about the safer recruitment procedures? |
- | How do governors ensure that appropriate child protection (CP) procedures are in place? |
- | How do governors ensure that the training programme is maintained and that new and temporary staff members are properly inducted? |
- | Who, on the governing body, is nominated to liaise with the local authority/outside agencies on CP issues and how are they prepared for this role? |
- | How do you know that there are appropriate procedures in place for managing safeguarding? |
- | How do the headteacher and staff account to you, with regard to safeguarding? |
- | How do you ensure that the school and its site are safe? |
- | How do you ensure that the ethos of the school promotes positive practice in relation to safeguarding? |
