The Role of the Senior Designated Professional

This additional guidance document refers to the Senior Designated Professional outlining their role and function within the school. In particular with regard to their legal responsibility for meeting all child protection issues relating to children who are students at their school or setting. It outlines good practice for having an alternate designate person who can act in the absence of the designated professional. In some larger school settings there might be a team of alternate designated professionals. Although the senior designated professional does not need to have qualified teacher status they must have the status and authority within the management structure to be able to effectively carry out the duties of the role. Key sections include:

a) Areas of Responsibility
1. Referrals
2. Training
3. Raising Awareness
