Gifted & Talented

1. The following email was sent to all schools in England (19th January 2010).

Supporting gifted and talented pupils

The Government is committed to ensuring that every child progresses well and that they receive an education that is personalised to their individual needs, including those with a particular gift or talent.

We appreciate and value the work you are doing to unlock the potential of all your pupils. We also know that there is more that we can do to better support you in identifying and providing for your gifted and talented pupils, particularly those from disadvantaged backgrounds.

To find out what we are doing to support you and your gifted and talented pupils, see the Gifted and Talented area of the TeacherNet website.

The website description of Gifted & Talented places the responsibility on schools but it also mentions the role of the regional partnerships and Local Authorities.

2. Consultation on the Pupil and Parent Guarantees: The specific Gifted & Talented references are highlighted in sections 176-185 and 358-368.

3. Finally, a communication from Young Gifted & Talented has appeared on the Young Gifted & Talented website to the effect that the site is closing down. The new web pages for gifted and talented education will be launched in the near future on the existing National Strategies website. Please ensure you and your pupils save any information from the site to your desk top (for example the school's online IQS audit). The Excellence East website will still be available.
