Mathematics Specialist Teachers in Primary Schools - COHORT 2

Sir Peter William's review of mathematics teaching in early years settings and primary schools recommended that:
There should be at least one mathematics specialist in each primary school, in post within 10 years, with deep mathematical subject and pedagogical knowledge, making appropriate arrangements for small and rural schools.

This national, centrally-funded and high-profile programme is being rolled out from January 2010, extending to all primary phase schools over a period of 5 years. In Norfolk we are very excited about this initiative and the potential benefits for improving provision and outcomes in mathematics for our young people.

We are now recruiting for Cohort 2 which will start in September 2010. Funding is provided by the DCSF for training Mathematics Specialist Teachers based on the table below.

School Size (NOR) Number of Mathematics Specialist Teachers
< 100 1 working across 4 schools
Between 100 and 200 1 working across 2 schools
> 200 1 working in each school

Details about this programme in Norfolk are available in the attached document,
'Information and Guidance for Schools in Participating Local Authorities'.

Recruitment and selection of schools and teachers
Schools selected to participate in the programme will demonstrate a clear and strong commitment to strengthening provision and raising attainment in mathematics and be prepared to enable a teacher to fully undertake all aspects of the programme over two years.

Teachers participating in the programme must be supported by their school leadership, be appropriately qualified and experienced to undertake study at Masters Degree level and have an enthusiasm for the subject. They will also need to be prepared to work with colleagues in their own, and possibly other, schools.
