Safeguarding Children - Update for Providing Staff Training
Safeguarding Training is a statutory requirement for all adults who work and volunteer on behalf of the School. It is the duty of the designated school trainer to ensure that all staff and volunteers are trained accordingly which would include Caretakers, Catering and Cleaning staff whether they are employed by the school directly or through a contractor.
We have attached the information sheet which has been forwarded to all contractors for your information. If your contractor is not listed, please inform Lorain Love.
It would be considered good practice to ensure regular visitors to the school, such as grounds staff, are also aware of school procedure and who to contact if they have any concerns or are approached by a child with sensitive information. The training will be given at the discretion of the designated school trainer and may consist of attendance to a full training, a brief induction of the minimum requirements or a clear understanding of the school procedures depending on the expected time staff, volunteers and regular visitors may spend at the school and their expected contact with the children. Full training would be advisable for any school visitor who is on site a minimum of three times within a three week period. For those who visit occasionally a form or card should be provided detailing schools procedure and who to contact if they have any concerns, please see MI Sheet 245/09.
It is suggested that the initial training could be given collectively to all staff/volunteers/regular visitors, and it may be helpful to work with other schools in your area to ensure alternative dates/times are available to those who may find it difficult to attend during school hours. Any associated costs to delivering the training will be the responsibility of individual schools, therefore co-operation between local schools may help to minimise any potential costs.
Full training should be provided to all staff/volunteers/regular visitors every third year. For anyone who falls into this remit in-between training dates, the designated school trainer should give a minimum training covering sections 3. Definitions of Child Abuse, 4. School Procedures and 7. Developing Knowledge, as part of a school induction within a reasonable timespan of them commencing at the school.
If you have any queries please contact Terry Cook, Debby McKechnie or Bob Hedley.
