Audit of the Safeguarding Self Assessment Tool

Governing bodies of maintained schools have a duty under section 175 (2) Education Act 2002 to make arrangements for ensuring the conduct of the school are exercised with a view to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of pupils at the school.

Further to this legislation Safeguarding in Education and Safer Recruitment (January 2007) places a duty on local authorities to monitor the safeguarding arrangements and practices in schools to ensure students at all schools are appropriately safeguarded and sufficient safeguards are in place to support and guide staff and volunteers to know what to do if they have concerns about a student.

The safeguarding in Education self assessment tool is designed for schools to seek evidence to demonstrate that safeguarding practices are always implemented and to support schools in raising their safeguarding awareness and also ensuring that any issues or concerns are identified through this process are appropriately addressed.

In view of this the Children's Services Management Team agreed in March 2010 that this audit would form part of the Quality Assurance annual work plan to capture a range of safeguarding activity within Children's Services.

Many of you have already completed the attached self assessment and have devised your own action or learning plan. If so and you are a school named in the attached list please could you return a copy of your completed form to lisa.flood-powell@norfolk.gov.uk alternatively you can post it to Lisa Flood-Powell, Project Officer, Sapphire House, Round Tree Way, Norwich, NR7 8SS.

If individual issues are highlighted these will be raised directly with you by the Safeguarding Adviser. A report of findings will be published at the end of the next 4 terms as each phase of this audit is completed. A final report will be presented to the Norfolk Safeguarding Children's Board when all 4 phases are complete. If you are not included in the first phase you will be sent a reminder at the beginning of the term the return for your school is required.
