One to One Tuition Update

A tutor recruitment event has been set up at Thorpe St Andrew School on 7 July 2010 (4.30 - 6.00 p.m.) in order for tutors and schools to meet face to face and begin the process of recruitment. If you are a school and wish to book a table at this event or you are a tutor wanting to contact schools in your area, please email tim.webb@norfolk.gov.uk as soon as possible.

Autumn Term Leaders' Briefings (Primary)

Next term Leaders' Briefings will focus on:

  • Selecting pupils for One to One tuition.
  • Quality Assurance- what does good tuition look like?
  • Tracking pupils after tuition.

It is hoped that all schools will attend one of these update briefings. Fliers will be with schools w/c 12 July.

    LAC and GRT

We hope that all schools will continue to allocate tuition places to students from vulnerable groups (ie, LAC, GRT, FSM etc) in 2010/11. To make sure that this is possible the authority will continue to provide extra One to One tuition places for LAC and GRT pupils. If you would like to request these extra places, in addition to your annual allocation, then please contact Tim Webb (tim.webb@norfolk.gov.uk), who will arrange for an adviser to contact you.

Extra Key Stage 2 places for 2009/10

The authority currently has a number of Key Stage 2 funded places still available for any schools who are able to start some tuition this term. Tuition can be completed in the autumn term. If you would like to take advantage of this funding for intervention for your students then please complete and return the 'Request for Extra KS2 Places Form' on the One to One website.

Reminder about safeguarding and safer working practice

There is a need for all schools to provide One to One tutors with a safeguarding induction which makes explicit the child protection procedures in place; who they should speak to about a concern and their responsibilities. As part of this induction they should provide One to One tutors with a copy of the child protection policy and/or a written statement about the procedures in place.

DfE and HR guidance on tuition during the school day

Tuition can take place during the school day as well as after school, at weekends or within a holiday period. Schools need to think carefully about the best model (s) they can use for their students. However it is essential that schools who deliver One to One tuition during the school day, take full account of existing contractual obligations and the implications for payment.

  • Full time teachers, who are already contracted by a school, may not be employed as a One to One tutor during the 'school day' though some could offer tutoring before or after the school day.
  • Part time teachers may tutor during the school day at times when they are not already contracted by the school. In this case there will need to be a new contract given.
  • Tutors who tutor during the school day must be paid according to their position on the teachers' main pay scale, rather than the One to One tutor flat rate of &pound25 per hour (&pound25.56 per hour from Sept).
  • See 'Developing One to One tuition. Human Resources Toolkit for HR Providers' pages 5 and 6 for further details. www.teachernet.gov.uk/_doc/14370/HR%20providers.pdf
