Norfolk's Vision and Approach to PSHE Education
Personal, Social, Health and Economic (PSHE) Education is a planned programme of learning opportunities and experiences that help children and young people grow and develop as individuals and as members of families and of social and economic communities. It supports children and young people to make informed decisions about their lives and makes a substantial contribution to the three Statutory Aims of the National Curriculum, Successful learners, Confident individuals and Responsible Citizens.
Sir Alasdair Macdonald conducted an independent review of PSHE Education in 2009 which recommended that PSHE Education become a statutory part of the national curriculum. This was due to happen from September 2011 but was removed from the Children, Schools and Families Bill 2009-10 before becoming an ACT during the recent election period.
In Norfolk, we still believe PSHE Education to be an essential part of the curriculum and have set up a steering group to design Norfolk's vision and approach to this area of the curriculum. Further details are enclosed which include more background information with steering group recommendations and a quick health check for you to use to evaluate your provision.
The annual PSHE Education conference will be held on the December 14th where Norfolk's vision and approach to PSHE Education will be officially launched. Please could you ask those linked to this curriculum area in your establishment to pencil this date in their diaries?
If you require any further information about the work of the steering group or would like some support for PSHE Education, please contact Christine Woods, Adviser for Teaching and Personalised Learning (christine.woods@norfolk.gov.uk).
