Health & Safety in Primary Science

We would like to clarify the situation regarding health and safety advice and support offered to schools.

The CLEAPPS membership and Health and Safety (H&S) advice that have been provided in previous years were paid centrally from the Secondary Team budget. Significant reductions in the budget for 2010 - 2011, and the foreseeable future, mean that this will no longer be possible. We are happy to continue to act as the focus for membership and distribution for schools wishing to remain CLEAPPS members.

The advantages to schools of membership of CLEAPPS are significant, and include:
  • full access to the CLEAPSS on-line resource of technical and safety information, including:
  • CD-ROMs of Science and Design & Technology publications
  • Student Safety Sheets
  • Guides on over a hundred specialist topics such as:
  • Small Mammals
  • Magnets for Primary Schools
  • Glues and Adhesives

The most recent publications have included:
Key Ideas in Primary Science - This is an initiative from the Hampshire Inspection and Advisory Service. CLEAPSS helped with its development. It presents the relatively few, powerful ideas of primary science in a simple format that will enable you to audit your present curriculum and ensure progression. Freely downloadable.

CLEAPSS Online Primary Resource - All our primary publications are now online and searchable! Please click the Primary resource button on the left. You will need the primary username and password as given in the PST Newsletter.

New guidance leaflet: PS86A Farm animals in school and on visits (Primary) - If you are planning a visit to a farm or farm centre this new leaflet outlines some issues for consideration and details of resources available.

New guide: G42 Plants for classrooms - A revised guide on the best plants to keep in the classroom, other resources needed and some activities you can do. It also includes a list of poisonous plants.

New guide: G161 Magnets (and electrostatics) in primary schools - A new guide full of ideas about teaching magnetism (and also about the strange force that makes a rubbed balloon stick to the wall). With advice on choosing, keeping and reviving magnets.

Be Safe! - published by the Association for Science Education, is the major guidance for health and safety in primary schools that we recommend. If you would like an easy way to order this booklet, please click the link www.ase.org.uk, which will take you to the ASE web site. The 4th Edition of Be Safe! Will be published in January 2011.

  • access to training courses at reduced cost

Individual school membership of CLEAPPS for primary schools is £0.1485 per pupil annually, with a minimum fee of £29.70.

We are able to offer you the benefits of full CLEAPPS membership for £20 per year. This will be taken from your miscellaneous school account by journal transfer if you decide to take up membership.
