Support Arrangements for Newly Arrived EAL Learners
Updated Information Regarding Arrangements for Schools Wishing to Purchase Advice and Support for Newly Arrived EAL Learners
The Ethnic Minority Achievement Grant (EMAG) is funding allocated to EAL learners who arrive during the course of the academic year. Each newly arrived pupil will attract funding of £300.00. This funding is now available from Reception year and upwards. To obtain this funding, schools need to complete a Notification of Newly Arrived Pupil' form. Upon receipt of the form, the Administration Team of the English Language Support Service will arrange for the funding to be transferred to the school budget. A language assessment is not required to release the EMAG funding, but schools can request an assessment if they wish.
As explained in MI sheet 81/10, schools can, if they wish, use this EMAG funding to purchase New Arrival Support packages, comprising of one, two or three hours support by specialist EAL teacher. An Isolated New Arrivals Package is also available which comprises of three visits during the academic year.
