New County Guidance on Curriculum Swimming

Children's Services guidance on support for curriculum swimming is being updated in relation to school staff directly working with children in the water during swimming lessons. This is where a member of school staff, working under the direction and supervision of the qualified swimming instructor takes responsibility for 'teaching' a small group of pupils in the water.

From January 2012 any school based staff will need to have attended the County Swimming Assistant Certificate course before working in this manner.

The course has been specifically designed to provide guidance on ensuring that all elements of health and safety are in place, but also to provide guidance on what to teach, how to teach it and to effectively support learning at poolside to optimise the experience for our young people.

  • The County certificate will allow staff (QTS and teaching assistants) to work under the guidance of the pool's swimming instructor (teacher) and take responsibility for a group of no more that 10 swimmers of similar ability in water not exceeding 1 metre in depth.
  • This certificate does not qualify candidates as swimming teachers (instructors)

This course does have a practical element where staff will be in the water, developing a greater understanding of teaching methods and aquatic skills.

It is fully resourced with teaching material, resource cards, DVD footage and animated graphics to help support the learning.

Dates for the course have been set for early 2011 in preparation for this and have been arranged on INSET days to reduce the impact to schools both in terms of disruption and financial cost.

Further details are available from the PE, Sport and Physical Development Service - 01603 307759

    Forthcoming Courses are:
  • January 3rd 2011
  • January 4th 2011
  • June 30th 2011
  • September 6th 2011

More dates will be released in 2011.

All courses through PE, Sport and Physical Development Service cost £140 per delegate. If schools wish to send multiple staff candidates then contact us to discuss a more appropriate pricing structure.
