Statutory Requirements for Safeguarding Training
In line with the statutory guidance, Safeguarding Children and Safer Recruitment in Education, every school should ensure that a senior member of staff (SDP) is designated to take lead responsibility for dealing with child protection and safeguarding issues. Schools also need to make arrangements for a deputy or alternate to act in the SDP's absence. In large establishments or those with a large number of child protection concerns, it may be necessary to have a number of alternate SDPs to manage the workload. In addition to basic child protection training, these people are required to undertake Safeguarding in Education Training. This is a whole day course covering the legal framework and other statutory guidance including OFSTED requirements for safeguarding. Refresher training needs to be undertaken once every two years.
In order to ensure that schools are compliant with their statutory safeguarding responsibilities, we have audited our existing safeguarding training records. It is encouraging to note that all schools now have at least one person who has attended or is due to attend Safeguarding in Education, Senior Designated Professional (SDP) training. The training records indicate however 163 schools do not have a trained alternate SDP.
In order that you are compliant with both statutory guidance and OFSTED requirements, it is important that you ensure that a SDP and alternate are in place and appropriate training has been arranged. Further guidance on the statutory safeguarding requirements for schools including training requirements is available in the Safeguarding Section of the My School website. Training can be booked via the CPD website at www.cpd.norfolk.gov.uk. Alternatively, please contact Amy Scott (Safeguarding Administrator) on 01603 307737 to discuss your training needs or if you believe that the relevant training has been undertaken.
Designated Staff Records
In order to support us to identify training needs, all schools need to maintain accurate on-line records of staff with designated roles for safeguarding, LAC and SEN and the associated training undertaken within the last 3-year period. This is done via the Designated Staff section on the My School website. Please ensure that your records are up to date.
