b) Forthcoming support

From January 2011, we will be offering schools and governing bodies two new packages:
b.1 a package of published statutory policies

The Local Authority has agreed with Adamson Publishing that we can make available model documents for the statutory policies that schools are required to have. These will also be updated as and when they change due to government legislation. Whilst some governing bodies may wish to use them as a final document, good practice is that they should be the starting point for discussion within the governing body to ensure that they fit totally with the school's own published aims and values.

b.2 GEL - the governors' e-learning site produced through a consortium of the Co-ordinators of Governor Services for the LAs within the Eastern Region.

GEL provides an alternative form of training for those governors who find it difficult to get to face-to-face sessions or who simply prefer to undertake training at home or at school. It provides both general information about a wide range of governance issues and some on-line training courses. Governor Services envisages that governing bodies will use it to supplement the training package that they already offer.

Access to the GEL site will be available free to all schools and governing bodies for a trial period from January 2011 to the end of the spring term. After that it will only be available to those governing bodies that either subscribe to the Governor Services annual package, or decide to buy into GEL only. The Services to Schools Brochure for 2011-12 will give more details.

c) Headteacher appointments

The Diocesan Boards and Governance and Leadership have agreed a common process for all headteacher appointments. This guidance will be used by Mike Simm and Chris Wilson-Town to support the coordination of headteacher appointments. The guidance will have phase specific packs that contain example activities, presentations and panel questions. From this term onwards, Mike Simm will be responsible for coordinating all secondary and special phase appointments and Chris Wilson-Town primary phase appointments.

The Diocesan Boards retain their responsibilities for church schools as before.

Rachael Morris is the named HR person for receiving copies of letters of resignation.

As the LA supports over 40 headteacher appointments each year, we ask that you contact your named coordinator adviser, Mike or Chris, and Rachael Morris simultaneously and as early as possible. This will enable the process to be as smooth as possible for you and ensure that support is given at the key times.
