Updated Guidance on Recruiting Tutors for One to One Tuition
1. | Teachers already on school staff wishing to tutor in their own school As the teacher will already have a contract to work at your school you only need to complete an appointment letter and Statement of Particulars, which you can find by clicking here. Copies should be sent to the HR Shared Service Centre together with the Employee Notification form. If the tutor takes on additional pupils please send an amended front sheet from the statement of particulars. |
2. | Schools wishing to appoint a tutor who is known to them Schools can employ a person who is known to them as a One to One tutor but must carry out a recruitment procedure consistent with Safer Recruitment guidelines (as outlined in chapters 3 and 4 of Safeguarding Children & Safer Recruitment in Education ) Tutors employed directly by a school would only be eligible to deliver tuition in the school that processed their application. Schools would need to send a copy of the Employee Appointment Form, appointment letter and Statement of Particulars to the HR Service Centre, indicating that the tutor has been recruited to work solely in that school. We would strongly recommend that all potential tutors who think they might want to work in more than one school, either now or in the future, should apply to join the One to One Tuition register. This would prevent the tutor having to undergo future recruitment processes for individual schools. It also relieves individual schools from the administrative burden of checking and monitoring CRBs, seeking additional references and undertaking other pre-employment checks. |
3. | Schools wishing to appoint a supply teacher who is currently on the NCC Supply Register, but has not applied to be on the One to One Tuition register If the potential tutor is currently on the supply register schools can carry out the recruitment procedure consistent with the Safer Recruitment guidelines as outlined above. To streamline the process, the potential tutor should contact the HR Shared Service Centre and ask for a copy of their original application form and references to be sent to the school where they wish to tutor. Please note that there may be some circumstances where the HR Shared Service Centre will be unable to provide a copy of the references and new references will need to be obtained. Tutors employed directly by a school would only be eligible to deliver tuition in the school that processed their application. We would strongly recommend that any tutor who thinks they might want to work in more than one school, either now or in the future, should apply to join the NCC One to One Register to prevent having to undergo future recruitment processes for individual schools. It also relieves individual schools from the administrative burden of checking and monitoring CRBs, seeking additional references and undertaking other pre-employment checks. |
4. | Recruitment through tutor agencies The LA is also liaising with three tutor/supply agencies to support the recruitment of tutors, however individual schools need to negotiate contracts and costs linked to their particular circumstances and follow safer recruitment practices. |
5. | Future Improvements to Recruitment Process We are reviewing the recruitment process for applications to the Supply and One to One registers to identify where we can streamline processes and reduce duplication. It is proposed that in the future Supply Teacher and One to One Tutor applications will be processed as a joint application. It is anticipated that we will move to this new recruitment process during the first half of the Summer Term. |
6. | Schools are reminded that the details for anyone working in their schools should be entered onto the Single Central Record |
