Develop Promoting Alternative Thinking Strategies (PATHS) in Your School From September 2011

Is improving emotional health and well being a priority for your school or on your school improvement plan?

Would you like to develop a whole school approach which enables pupils to improve their language of feelings, emotions and problem solving skills? If the answer is Yes read on as PATHS might be right for you!

Promoting Alternative Thinking Strategies (PATHS) is an evidence based programme which has been piloted in Norfolk within 8 schools during the last two years- findings show it has made significant positive difference in pupil's aggression and disruptive behaviour, concentration, attention, social and emotional competence.

We have a unique opportunity through the Early Intervention Grant (EIG) to support up to 22 schools to develop PATHS through a whole school approach from September 2011, and we would like to give you the opportunity to volunteer your school to participate.

The Purpose
PATHS is an evidenced based programme for schools, it has been designed to support the development of self-control, emotional awareness, and the interpersonal problem-solving skills of 5 to 11 year olds.
PATHS is delivered as a school based whole class approach starting in reception class. It has been designed to promote emotional and social competencies, reduce aggression and behaviour problems in primary school aged children.

The Programme
PATHS is delivered by a step by step approach. The classroom materials have been adapted so they are very easy to use and demonstrate clear links to the curriculum. As a participating school you would need to timetable a couple of short PATHS sessions per week into the curriculum. It can be delivered flexibly and fits well with:
  • PSHE and citizenship
  • Healthy Schools, with a particular focus on the Emotional Health and Well-being

As part of the programme schools are encouraged to identify a pupil of the day, whereby they are complimented on their ability to help others. The techniques used to teach PATHS include role pay, social and self-reinforcement, story telling and modelling. Schools will be supported to actively involve parents.

    The Benefits
Evidence of this approach has shown that the benefits can be seen on a day-to-day basis after 10 weeks.Research has also identified that where schools have implemented PATHS as a whole school approach it has had a positive impact on supporting pupils to:
  • Build a vocabulary of feelings
  • Develop the ability to describe own feelings
  • Recognise emotions in others
  • Empathise
  • Develop self-control and manage emotions
  • Develop cooperation
  • Deal with problems

    The Offer
To help you develop PATHS with fidelity as a whole school approach:
  • We will offer an initial full days training for all classroom Teachers, HTLA's- TA's who support the whole class.
  • We will provide regular support from a PATHS Coach who will work alongside you and offer additional training and advice.
  • You will be provided with the relevant curriculum packs and resources for each class, with schemes of work and lesson plans available for all year groups.
  • You will have access to a large number of on-line resources that have been developed through the pilot project.
  • You will have access to a network of PATHS practitioners to share best practice, plus opportunities to participate in development opportunities.
  • You will be asked to identify an In-House Coordinator who has allocated time each week with which to take lead responsibility for developing PATHS and liaising with the Coach.
  • You will be required to participate in a pupil level evaluation process, through an on-line pre and post implementation survey to ensure we can track individual pupils' progress.

    The Process
We have the opportunity to recruit up to 22 schools to develop PATHS from September 2011.To ensure that we get a good mix of schools we have developed a process with which schools can volunteer to participate in PATHS.
