Key Stage 1 Statutory Moderation in 2012

Evaluations from schools have continued to confirm the success of our process where schools have the opportunity to discuss their work in detail with specialist advisers offering individualised feedback. Consequently this will be repeated for the 2012 cycle. Approx 25% of schools with Key Stage 1 pupils will be involved in the statutory moderation (a list of participants is attached) and these schools will have a timed and tightly focused one-to-one discussion of pupil samples with both a mathematics and English adviser in turn. This will then allow a much more precise evaluation of the evidence to be made and will quickly identify any further issues or training needs which the school could be helped to address.

If your school is to be part of the statutory moderation we will write to you again shortly with details of your appointment. If you are not part of that group we will, as in the past, offer the opportunity for your school to access a voluntary moderation meeting in this revised format, which you can fund through your Primary Improvement Partnership Package (PIPP) or as advice and support. Alternatively, cluster moderation for a group of schools can be funded by using cluster monies. We will send further details to schools later in the Spring term.

In the meantime, in order to support the collection of evidence throughout the year, can we remind you that the evidence in each subject (reading, writing and mathematics) should reflect pupils' abilities to use and apply their skills in a range of different tasks across the curriculum, and may also take the form of observation notes, photographs, videos, etc. with test and task papers forming only a very small part of this evidence. Support for gathering evidence in reading is attached.

All teachers responsible for summative assessment of pupils in year 2 are required to attend. In line with Lord Bew's recommendations, we are also encouraging schools to invite a representative Year 3 teacher (in the main receiving school for an Infant school), to further the knowledge at Key Stage 2 of Key Stage 1 assessment and moderation, and improve transition.

Could we also ask that if you are in the group of schools engaged in statutory moderation, you let us know how many classes with Year 2 pupils you have in your school. This will then ensure the appropriate arrangements and timing of your appointment. Please email this information to: Elizabeth Philpot by Friday 27 January 2012.

Please also note that this is an entirely separate process from the statutory moderation of Key Stage 2 (Year 6) writing which will be carried out later in the Summer term. This is likely to follow a similar process of activity and we will write to you again about this, as soon as possible after the Department of Education have confirmed the details to us.
