Abolition of the General Teaching Council for England (GTCE)

You will probably be aware that the GTCE is to be abolished and will cease to exist after 31st March 2012.

Up until the 31st March 2012 teachers and instructors must still be registered with the GTCE in order to hold a teaching post in a school. Headteachers currently have a responsibility to check that prospective teaching staff are registered with the GTCE and have the relevant teaching status. This requirement ceases with effect from 31st March 2012.

Under the School Teachers' Pay and Conditions Document employers are required to pay £33 to teachers, who must register with the GTCE, £33 towards the cost of registration. With effect from 1st April 2012 there is no requirement for teachers to register with the GTCE and pay the annual registration fee. Accordingly Employers will no longer need to pay the £33 payment towards the cost of registration that has previously been paid in April salaries for the majority of staff. This is with the exception of Supply Teachers who received this in their first salary payment for work after 1st April. Therefore, teachers' and instructors' salary payments for work undertaken after the 1st April 2012 will not include this £33 payment.

Please can you ensure relevant staff in your school are aware of this information.

Further information and Frequently Asked Questions about the closure of the GTCE and how this affects teachers can be found on the GTCE website at www.gtce.org.uk

On 1st April 2012 a new executive agency of the Department for Educations - The Teaching Agency - will begin its work, taking over some of the GTCE's remit. We are in the process of identifying what this means in practice and will issue further information and/or guidance when this is available. In the meantime further information about the Teaching Agency can be found on the Department for Education Website at www.education.gov.uk
