Management Information Sheet
Abolition of the General Teaching Council for England (GTCE)
This is a reminder that the GTCE has now been abolished, having ceased to exist after 31st March 2012. Therefore, from 1st April 2012 teachers and instructors no longer have be registered with the GTCE in order to hold a teaching post in a school and neither do headteachers have a responsibility to check that prospective teaching staff are registered with the (former) GTCE.
Previously, under the School Teachers' Pay and Conditions Document employers were required to pay £33 to teachers, who were required to register with the GTCE, £33 towards the cost of registration. With effect from 1st April 2012, since there is no longer a requirement for teachers to register with the GTCE and pay the annual registration fee, employers will no longer pay the £33 payment towards the cost of registration.
Therefore, teachers' and instructors' salary payments for work undertaken after the 1st April 2012 will not include this £33 payment. Given that this has previously been paid in April salaries for the majority of staff, if you have not done so already please can you ensure relevant staff in your school are aware of this information.
On 1st April 2012 a new executive agency of the Department for Educations - The Teaching Agency - began its work, taking over some of the GTCE's remit. We are continuing in the process of identifying what this precisely means in practice and will issue further information and/or guidance when this is available. In the meantime further general information about the Teaching Agency and its revised functions can be found on the Department for Education Website at www.education.gov.uk
