The National Professional Qualification for Headship (NPQH)

The National Professional Qualification for Headship (NPQH) - still the first choice qualification for aspirant school leaders

Government legislation states that it is no longer compulsory for an individual to hold 'The National Professional Qualification for Headship' (NPQH) or an equivalent qualification before being appointed to the position of headteacher in any school. However, it is highly likely that employers will continue to seek evidence of further appropriate and relevant continuing professional development (CPD), particularly with a focus on school leadership. This is their right when setting selection criteria for the appointment of a headteacher.

The Local Authority agrees with the 'National College for School Leadership' (from April 2012 an executive agency of the Department for Education) that NPQH remains the first choice qualification for anyone aspiring to be a headteacher or principal.

The recently redesigned NPQH has just one application window each year and this is currently open until July 3rd 2012. If you are no more than 12-18 months from applying for a headship post, will be ready to take up a headship as soon as you graduate and have the full support and endorsement of your headteacher we strongly recommend that you consider making an application.

The new NPQH follows a modular curriculum based on Master's level criteria. It will develop talented leaders from all backgrounds who can deliver educational excellence in a self-improving system and high quality outcomes for pupils.
