Swimming in the Autumn Term? Norfolk County Requirements

Norfolk County Mandatory Requirements

The programme of study for swimming is statutory and must be delivered at a point in Key Stage 2 (optional for Key Stage 1; often used to enhance and enrich provision). Government guidelines state that by the time children complete primary school, they should be able to swim unaided for a distance of at least 25 metres as a minimum.

Schools are reminded of the following Norfolk county mandatory requirements:

  • Any teacher (QTS) or Teaching Assistant working on poolside to provide swimming instruction to a small group under the direction of the swimming instructor must have attended the 'County Swimming Assistant Certificate' course. (Next running 5th September 2012 - INSET day)
  • Teaching Assistants who are being deployed as visit leaders must attend 'The Safe Supervision of Swimming' course if the school is not sending a Teacher (QTS) with the group. (Next running 8th November.)
  • Teachers/Teaching Assistants cannot act as both Visit Leader and assist in the instruction of teaching swimming in the same visit.

For further information, including frequently asked questions and how to book onto the courses, please see the attached file.
