Drug and Alcohol Advice for Schools
This advice replaces that issued in 2008 and is the Norfolk response to the government document DfE and ACPO Drug Advice for Schools issued to schools earlier this year. Schools should be aware that there are some important changes to the previous guidance, particularly with regard to the disposal of substances that are confiscated following an incident. It is essential, therefore, that schools amend their school drugs policy to reflect this.
Drugs and Alcohol: Advice to schools aims to provide schools with a framework and model policy to help them develop their own Schools Drugs Policy. It also offers a model of good practice for developing procedures for managing any substance related incidents that may occur in schools.
To support this new document, the Schools Drugs Adviser will be offering INSET courses for both senior leaders and governors to help schools develop their own Schools Drugs Policy. In addition, schools will receive details of conferences being held in November: these will focus on the continuing importance of health and well-being for schools and its impact on the standards agenda. Full details of the conferences are available on www.cpd.norfolk.gov.uk/sdms (Activity Ref: ENHG7 / ENHG8)
Schools may also find the following document useful: Young Person’s Substance Misuse Related Needs Assessment 2012. This aims to identify substance misuse related needs of young people in Norfolk and to provide guidance regarding the range of services available. This may be obtained at either www.nordat.org.uk or www.matthewproject.org.
